Dr. Abo is a wilderness EMS and emergency physician and toxinologist in Florida and assistant professor for Florida Statue University School of Medicine. He started in EMS over 28 years ago as a teenager in high school in Mount Laurel, NJ. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also obtained his NREMT-P, CCEMT-P, and FP-C, he stayed on as faculty for the Center for Emergency Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine as a researcher and Coordinator of Education in International Emergency Medicine/EMS. He then spent some time abroad living in India just prior to starting medical school in the San Francisco Bay area. After walking with honors from a dual medicine and master’s in public health program from Touro College of Medicine – California, he took time off prior to residency to start a non-profit in Africa aimed at decreasing maternal and neonatal mortality and trauma. He completed a four-year emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center – Miami Beach and Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, FL, while completing a fellowship in wilderness medicine through the Wilderness Medical Society. After residency, Dr. Abo completed an EMS fellowship at the University of Florida where he then accepted a full-time position. Throughout all his training, Dr. Abo has remained clinically active in EMS FL-5 DMAT disaster team, FEMA/Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Task Force 1 (FLTF1). In 2019, he left his full-time position with the University of Florida to move to Naples. He has also remained active as a paramedic physician with current specialty rescue certifications with various services globally and continues to do research and lecture globally. Dr. Abo has authored numerous chapters and research on a variety of EMS and wilderness medicine topics including multiple chapters in Wilderness EMS Textbooks for envenomation, marine envenomation, austere medicine, and water rescue. He currently oversees medical direction and consultation for several projects, services, EMS schools, media production, and specialty training including being one of only four course directors for the Wilderness EMS Medical Director’s Course. He also serves as medical director for the International Board of Specialty Certifications (IBSC) where he helped to create the Wilderness Paramedic Certification (WP-C) as well as consultant to the FBI Special Hazards Response teams. Dr. Abo is an innovator in Emergency and Pre-Hospital Medicine, the recipient of several awards for education, heroism, and valor including being the only person in the hemisphere to be inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Extreme Environment Medicine.

Anthony grew up in Staten Island, New York and moved to Erie, PA in 2006 where he began his medical career as an EMT. He then attended college in Erie, PA earning an Associates degree in nursing at Mercyhurst North East and went on to complete his Bachelor’s degree at Pennsylvania State University. Anthony worked for several years as a registered nurse before following his dream of attending medical school at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his three year emergency medicine residency training at AHN Saint Vincent and served as a chief resident in his final year. Anthony started his medical career in EMS as an EMT and now has aspirations to give back to the EMS community as a medical director. Anthony is completing his fellowship with the intention of elevating prehospital care with his expertise as an emergency medicine physician and also to serve as a resource for the EMS community. He’s also a Supervisory Medical Officer for the National Disaster Medical System and a Mountain Rescue Association Rescue-Certified member of the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference, and Medical Advisor and Teaching Specialist for the Eastern Region, National Cave Rescue Commission. His Austere EMS/wilderness first aid involvement dates to when he worked summers during college as a National Park Service Ranger and took one of the country’s first EMT-Basic courses back in the 1970s. He continued with more advanced EMS education and teaching, went to medical school, and ended up contributing to the first and two subsequent versions of the national paramedic curriculum. His current project is a free, online, medically-oriented textbook, Appalachian Search and Rescue, which will include all material required to meet the Wilderness Medical Society’s wilderness first aid curriculum.

Brian has been involved in Emergency Medicine since 1998, becoming a Pennsylvania and Nationally Registered Paramedic in 2002. Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Saint Vincent College in 2003 and has held various clinical supervisory roles and educational positions in the EMS field, including Program Director of the Mutual Aid-UPMC-CEM Paramedic Training Consortium. Currently, Brian is the Senior Emergency Medicine Education Specialist at Mutual Aid Ambulance Service, Inc. with roles in advisement, program development, and instruction of the Paramedic, Advanced EMT, EMT and American Heart Association certification programs. Brian was diagnosed with immune mediated necrotizing myositis (IMNM) in 2017, a rare autoimmune disease affecting his muscles. As an active member of The Myositis Association, living with an autoimmune disease has created an opportunity to create awareness and advocacy for rare disease patients and the EMS providers that care for them. Outside of work, Brian is a certified USA Hockey Level 3 coach and serves on the Board of Directors on various committees at Westmoreland Hockey Association.

Brian Dawson Brian started as a volunteer E.M.T. in 1992 and became a professional paramedic in 1994. He earned a B.A.. in Communications from Seton Hill University and an M.L.I.S. from the University of Pittsburgh. Brian would bring over two decades of experience in emergency management as a paramedic and law enforcement officer to the PA Department of Education as the Acting Deputy Secretary of Education for Libraries. In 2015, a cold left him blind and paralyzed from the chest down. After a painstaking three-year diagnostic journey, he was diagnosed with M.O.G.A.D., a rare neuroimmune disease. Through his experiences, he saw firsthand the systemic gaps in healthcare, leading him to advocate for rare disease patients. He serves as a member of the Pennsylvania Rare Disease Advisory Council (P.A.R.D.A.C.) and The Sumaira Foundation, where he dedicates his time and insights to cultivating clinician empathy, improving healthcare access and outcomes, and health literacy.

Currently an EMS Specialist with UPMC Prehospital Care, Cheryl’s nursing career started at UPMC Presbyterian in 1987 in cardiology working in the CCU, CCL, EP Lab, and cardiology research, obtaining both CCRN and CRC. For the past 20 years she has been with UPMC Prehospital Care managing the AED Program for UPMC and assisting in the community. Her PHRN was obtained in 2019. She is also the chair for the local Western PA chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) where she takes great pleasure in doing SCAA Hero Recognition events.

Eric is the Chief of Shaler Hampton EMS and has been active as an EMS provider for 43 years. He has worked in the EMS system on both sides of Pennsylvania in just about every conceivable type of service and role including volunteer, paid private EMS, response paramedic and flight paramedic and has lead several services. During these years and these places he has witnessed first-hand the progression from a nearly all volunteer system to now a nearly 100% paid system. Eric is also deeply involved with an EMS advocacy group called Citizens Concerned for EMS, a grass roots group composed of mostly retired EMS leaders from SW PA, who are dedicated to finding permanent ways to improve our EMS system.

Wesley Semple is the Manager of Prehospital Operations for the Allegheny Health Network Prehospital Response Program where he handles management and operations of 6 paramedic response units, 2 physician response units and the Medical Special Operations Group. Mr. Semple is a Nationally Registered Paramedic that has also been affiliated with Ross/West View EMSA since 2001. Additionally, Mr. Semple has been assigned to the North Hills Special Response Team as a Tactical Paramedic since 2010. Mr. Semple started his public safety career in 2000 with the Berkeley Hills Fire Company and spent 5 years as Fire Chief. Mr. Semple holds a BS in Emergency Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Legal Studies from California University of Pennsylvania. He also is a Critical Care Paramedic, Certified Fire Officer, Certified Medical Transport Executive along with numerous Tactical Certifications including being an Active Shooter Instructor. He is also an adjunct instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy and 3 Community Colleges in Western Pennsylvania.

Since completing his training, he has worked in community emergency medicine. She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Services (EMS). She has chaired the Networking Committee of the Physician Inclusion Council of Pitt and UPMC (PICUP) for 6 years and now serves as the first Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion of UPMC Graduate Medical Education and first Vice Chair Diversity, Health Equity, and Inclusion of Department of Emergency Medicine. She also is the Co-Chair of UPP EM D, E, and I Committee and Vice Chair of NAEMSP D and I Task Force. She has created and promoted many initiatives to include “Meet and Greet UPMC” Night; UPMC ME Townhalls addressing systemic racism and health disparities; URiM Virtual Recruitment Diversity Brunches, antiracism curriculum FOREM (Framework of Race Equity medicine), and creating a Department Diversity Champions list for better networking and communication. Dr. Tripp received the UPMC Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service (ACES) for her outstanding accomplishments and commitment in D, E, and I in 2019. She was raised in Upper St. Clair, PA and began her academic journey across the East coast and Midwest after high school. She completed her MD at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, MPH at Harvard School of Public Health, emergency medicine residency at the University of Chicago, and her EMS Fellowship at UPMC in 2017. Heather is a Physician Assistant at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, in the Division of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care. Prior to becoming a PA in 2013, Heather was a paramedic for 4 years at Ross West View EMSA. Heather’s clinical interests include the intersection between end of life care and emergency medical services and she is currently working on a statewide protocol that would allow Pennsylvania EMS providers to deliver end of life care on scene. Additionally, she is passionate about ensuring EMS is trained to deliver care to complex medical patients and frequently goes to local EMS agencies to provide education on medically complex children who are discharging home from the hospital. She is trained in communication and helps to facilitate multiple communication courses. She lectures on the topics of death and dying, Pediatric Palliative Care, communication, and delivering serious news. She is a preceptor for PA students and sits on several committees both with UPMC, as well as statewide. In her spare time Heather is the co-chair of the Emerging Leaders Alliance within the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She also volunteers for Paws Across Pittsburgh as a foster dog Mom. She enjoys going to brunches and breweries with her friends and her dogs.
